About Winton Wetlands

Winton Wetlands is one of the largest restoration projects of degraded wetlands in the Southern Hemisphere, located near Benalla in northeastern Victoria, Australia. The wetlands were originally part of the Broken River floodplain, transformed by the creation of Lake Mokoan, which was decommissioned and removed to restore the natural ecosystem. Today, the wetlands span approximately 2,100 hectares of open water, marshes, grasslands, and woodlands. The diverse habitats support a variety of native wildlife including numerous bird species such as brolgas, bitterns, and magpie geese, making it a prime destination for birdwatching and nature study. Walking and cycling trails wind through the reserve, allowing visitors to experience the regenerating environment and cultural heritage sites significant to the local Taungurung people, the traditional custodians of the land. Opportunities for recreation include fishing in designated areas, guided tours, and photography. Seasonal flooding sustains the wetland ecology, and interpretive signage educates visitors about the area's natural and cultural history. The reserve also plays an important role in regional water management and conservation, balancing environmental restoration with public access and education. Winton Wetlands’ combination of restored habitats, cultural significance, and outdoor activities offers visitors a tranquil yet engaging experience year-round.
